Wavell Avenue wins BC Filly & Mare Sprint; sire Harlington bought by Schumer BS
HARLINGTON, bought for $90,000 by Chad Schumer on behalf of Saudi Arabian-based interests at last year’s Keeneland November Sale, leapt to prominence on the world stage on Saturday when his daughter Wavell Avenue captured the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland.
In the process, the four-year-old boosted her earnings to just over $850,000.
She is one of four stakes horses this year for Harlington, who was also represented on Sunday by Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes winner Uzziel. Others include the Grade 1-placed Room For Me and Grade 3 winner Harlington’s Rose.
Harlington enjoyed his finest moment on the track when successful in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap. The son of Unbridled is out of the outstanding champion Serena’s Song, whose 18 victories included the Mother Goose Stakes, Beldame Stakes and Haskell Invitational. The daughter of Rahy has been just as brilliant at stud, producing Group 1 winner Sophisticat and Grade 2 winner Grand Reward in addition to Harlington.
