Tour de Force from Paid Up Subscriber
Nothing could touch Paid Up Subscriber in the G3 Shuvee Handicap at Saratoga on Sunday, as the Candy Ride mare served up a tour de force of a performance to win by 32 1/4 lengths.
Johnny Velazquez had Paid Up Subscriber within striking distance of the leader Terra Promessa as the early part of the race unfolded. He unleashed his mount with seven-sixteenths to run and thereafter, Paid Up Subscriber sauntered clear to win as she pleased, totally unchallenged.
Paid Up Subscriber is the third foal out of Shriek, a stakes-placed daughter of Street Cry purchased by Chad Schumer, as agent, for $37,000 while in foal to Scat Daddy at Keeneland in November 2014.
“I’m very proud of her,” said co-owner Peter Brant. “She was running against a pretty filly [Songbird] last time and was right there. I was very pleased. I couldn’t be happier.”
Paid Up Subscriber began her career for Al Stall, who trained her to win the 2016 G2 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs, in which she overturned Untapable, and run placed in the G1 Delaware Handicap and G1 Spinster Stakes.
At the end of her four-year-old season, she was sold for $1.1 million to Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm and transferred to Chad Brown. Sunday’s victory was her first for Brown although she has run creditably in defeat this year, notably when second in the G1 Ogden Phipps Stakes and third in the G1 Madison Stakes. She currently boasts close to $900,000 in earnings.
