Smart Aqueduct win for Pletcher 3yo; dam a Schumer purchase

A good update came the way of recent purchase Smart ‘N Special in the win of Atlantic Road for Todd Pletcher at Aqueduct on Monday.

The Quality Road colt was making only his second start and showed a determined attitude to repel Nepotism with the pair five lengths clear of the third.

Pletcher is in the relatively unusual position of owning Atlantic Road, as he explained to the Aqueduct notes team.

“He was green in his debut and benefitted for the start, and blinkers seemed to have him more focused,” he said. “I acquired him privately when he was scratched from the OBS 2-year-old sale last June. I don’t own many and was just in the right place when he became available. He’s a great physical, very much like his sire.”

His dam Smart ‘N Special was purchased for just $20,000 by Chad Schumer as agent out of last year’s Keeneland November Sale. A full-sister to Grade 1 winner Shadow Cast, the daughter of Smart Strike was bought in foal to young Grade 1 sire Liam’s Map.

The mare’s other winners include Marzouq, a highly-rated performer in England, while she also has a two-year-old colt by Cairo Prince and yearling colt by Nyquist.
