Scrapper off the mark at Gulfstream; dam a Schumer purchase

A switch to turf did the trick for $600,000 2yo Scrapper at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Making his third start for Todd Pletcher in the 7 1/2f maiden special weight, the son of Orb slipped through on the fence to win going away from The Green Mo’ster in the 11 horse field.

Scrapper was bred by Christine Hayden out of Lynnette, who was bought for $210,000 with Schumer Bloodstock while in foal to Elusive Quality at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale. The foal she was carrying at the time turned out to be Jennifer Lynnette, winner of last year’s Group 3 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine.
