New stakes win for Roman Officer; dam bought for $45,000
Roman Officer successfully defended his title in the West Virginia Legislature Chairman’s Cup at Mountaineer Park on Saturday, scoring by a length to land his second stakes race and 13th win overall.
The tough gelding, now the winner of approximately $325,000, is out of Gem Sleuth, purchased for $45,000 in foal to Paynter by Chad Schumer, as agent, at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale.
Not long after her purchase, Gem Sleuth’s two-year-old Gemologist colt, Theory, emerged as one of the best of his generation, winning a Saratoga maiden on debut en route to taking the G3 Futurity Stakes.
Also on the Mountaineer card, 10-time winner Galton ran second in the West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker’s Cup to bring his earnings to over $412,000. The Graded stakes-placed son of Offlee Wild is out of Nibbana, bought for $27,000 by Chad Schumer, as agent, at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale. Nibbana is a Giant’s Causeway half-sister to classy sprinter Dietrich from the family of Coronation Stakes winner Chimes Of Freedom and top miler Spinning World.
