Late rally secures G1 Matriarch victory for Stormy Lucy; dam purchased by Schumer BS
Settled midfield by Kent Desormeaux, Stormy Lucy came with a late rally to deny Recepta at the wire. Filimbi was a length and a half away in third.
Stormy Lucy has kept good company throughout her career. Initially trained by Frank Lucarelli, the daughter of Stormy Atlantic won the Golden Poppy Stakes en route to running second in the Del Mar Oaks (G1) and third in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1).
She later added the Santa Ana Stakes (G2) to her record before changing hands to Steve Moger, in whose colours she won the Santa Barbara Handicap (G3) and ran third in this year’s renewal of the Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1).
Stormy Lucy is one of three winners out of Here Comes Lucinda, a Dixieland Band half-sister to the Grade 2-placed Thatswhatimean and Atswhatimtalknbout.
On what was a productive weekend, another tough individual, Patrioticandproud, ran second in the Valedictory Stakes (G3) at Woodbine. The six-time winner now boasts over $600,000 in earnings. He is out of Luvina, purchased by Chad Schumer, as agent, for $40,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale.
