Homebred Saracosa sets new track record in Love Sign Stakes

Our homebred Saracosa ran out the brilliant winner of the Love Sign Stakes at Colonial Downs on Sunday, running a track record of 1:39.7 in the process.

Saracosa hadn’t enjoyed the best of trips in her first two starts this year but there were no issues this time, with the mare rallying from the back of the field to win going away by a length and a half.

Trained by Cipriano Contreras, Saracosa is now closing in on earnings of $500,000 in a 23-start career that also includes a win in the Bob Fortus Stakes and placings in the G1 La Troienne Stakes, G2 Delaware Handicap and G2 Azeri Handicap.

“Her first start of the year at Churchill Downs was at a flat mile—that was the only option, but she wants to go longer,” said Chad Schumer. “Her second start (in the Delaware Handicap, G2) wasn’t the best; she had some trouble. Today she finally got a clean trip and she won. I know if she gets clear, she will run her race. There aren’t a lot of spots for older fillies and mares going two turns on dirt. This race was one turn but it was 1 1/16 miles, and I think that makes a difference.”

By top broodmare sire Bernardini, Saracosa was bred by Meritage Ventures Inc out of Homeschooling, purchased by Chad Schumer as agent for $105,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Sale. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro is exceptionally well related as a granddaughter of blue hen Korveya and therefore a relation to Bosra Sham and Hector Protector.
