Big Kitten romps at Newcastle for Mark Johnston

Big Kitten prior to selling at the Arqana May Sale

BIG KITTEN, a private yearling purchase by Johnny Collins of Brown Island Stables with Schumer Bloodstock, gained a deserved win at Newcastle on Tuesday evening, romping by five lengths as the heavy favourite.

The Mark Johnston-trained colt was coming off a runner-up effort to Kentucky Derby hopeful Gronkowski and quickened clear in a manner that prompted the Racing Post to comment ‘he looks to have done well over the winter and can go on from here.’

Big Kitten was purchased privately for $35,000 at the Keeneland September Sale and went on to turn a good profit for Collins when reselling for €175,000 to Richard Knight at the Arqana May Breeze-up in France.

By Kitten’s Joy, he was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings out of the Rahy mare Queen Martha, a half-sister to G3 winner Clearly A Queen.
