Barbecue Eddie closes in on million dollar earnings
It was the tenth victory for the Sheikh Hamdan colour-bearer, who ran third in the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes for Brian Koriner before switching to Doug Watson’s barn in 2009.
One of 26 Graded stakes winners by Stormy Atlantic, Barbecue Eddie was bred in Maryland by Margaret Addis out of The Green Owl, purchased by Chad Schumer for $35,000 at the 2000 Keeneland November Sale. The winning daughter of Carson City is also the dam of Slip And Drive (by Artie Schiller), who ran third in last year’s Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile.
“His target is the Godolphin Mile – a race he sadly had to miss last year due to illness – and we will look after him,” said Doug Watson following the race. “He owes us nothing and we will space his races out with World Cup night in mind. He may be nine now, but he retains his ability and has proved this 1600 meters to be ideal on an all-weather surface he just loves.”
