$13,000 yearling purchase Markhan set for York Ebor meeting

July 20

The prestigious York Ebor Festival meeting could be on the agenda for Markhan following his victory in a competitive mile handicap at Naas in Ireland on Wednesday evening.

The David Marnane-trained three-year-old battled bravely to repel the older horse Stronger Than Me and record his second success of the season. The Racing Post were particularly taken with his win, labelling him as colt that is ‘improving fast’.

Markhan, by Birdstone, was a $13,000 yearling purchase by Chad Schumer at the 2014 Keeneland September Sale. He was resold at Goresbridge the following May by Johnny Collins’ Brown Island Stables for €145,000 to Ibrahim Rachid, acting on behalf of Prince Saif Aldin al Saud.

David Marnane told the Racing Post: “He’s a grand horse and very progressive. He’s still learning and there is a 1m handicap at York’s Ebor meeting that we might look at now for him.”

Chad and Johnny have forged quite a partnership in recent years. In addition to Markhan, they teamed up to purchase recent exciting debut winner Syphax, who could run in Saturday’s Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot, and Lingfield Park scorer High Acclaim. Another purchase, a $35,000 son of First Defence, turned a good profit for Collins this May when resold for €150,000 at Goresbridge.
